Discipline and motivation are key concepts for anyone who has a weight loss success story. Yet these 2 words are actually quite unique with each holding their own power. But in my experience it is discipline that trumps motivation if weight loss is going to be attained and sustained for any notable period of time.
“Discipline is doing what you really don’t want to do so you can do what you really want to do.” – Jeff Fisher Let me describe for you what weight loss discipline looks like as it concerns food intake: It takes a dieting commitment even when you are surrounded by tasty treats and everyone around you is indulging and inviting you to join them. It takes prepping your meals at home even when it would be more convenient to stop and pick something up at a takeout restaurant. It takes saying no to social occasions that are thwart with unhealthy food and drink options. And it takes working through any and all non-productive food cravings. And when it comes to exercise, this is what a disciplined person exhibits: They exercise even when their mood tells them differently. It takes working through feelings of fatigue, soreness or lethargy and moving anyway. It takes rearranging one’s schedule to make sure your exercise is accomplished. Getting enough replenishing sleep also takes a disciplined approach for the body will revolt at the lack of rest. Remember, you will not always feel motivated to stick to your weight loss plan. There will be ebbs and flows as motivation comes and goes for all of us. Motivation is important, but it is when you practice discipline day in and day out – facing barriers to progress head on – that is when you will be successful on your weight loss journey!
